A folder contained inside another folder is called a subfolder, subdirectory, or child of that folder. The folder can also be referred to as the root. Files are kept organized by storing related files in the same folder. A typical file system may contain thousands (or even hundreds of thousands) of folders. In computing, a folder or directory is a virtual container originally derived from an earlier Object-oriented programming concept by the same name within a digital file system, in which groups of computer files and other folders can be kept and organized.
It is named a "tree structure" because the classic representation resembles a tree, even though the chart is generally upside down compared to an actual tree, with the "root" at the top and the "leaves" at the bottom. Ī tree structure is a way of representing the hierarchical nature of a structure in a graphical form.

Some file managers contain features inspired by web browsers, including forward and back navigational buttons. Files are typically displayed in a hierarchy.
